British workforce must be trained to increase skills

After the publication of an updated shortage occupation list by the Migration Advisory Committee, the Recruitment & Employment Confederation has called for the “upskilling” of UK workers so they are able to plug gaps in the labour market.

Whilst the REC understands that it is necessary to recruit employees from overseas for certain positions, it is vital for the UK that its indigenous workforce can meet the needs of businesses.

CEO’s See People Management Skills As The Most Important Of Abilities

A study by the Institute of Learning and Management (ILM) has revealed 27% of CEOís see People management and communication skills as abilities that are most important in their managers during the recession.

It also found that financial aptitudes were in demand, with 22% stating cost control and budgeting skills at the top of their list.

Penny de Valk, chief executive of ILM, said: “The findings emphasise the need to continue focusing on leadership and management development, even during in a downturn, when budgets are tight.

“If businesses are to survive the recession and emerge well placed to take advantage of the recovery, they should focus on improving core skills, she added.
